South Burlington – The University of Vermont Health is excited to share that a second apartment building for employees and their families is currently in development. On April 27, after completing a joint project with Snyder-Braverman Development Co., UVM Health opened 303 Market St., its first 61-unit apartment building dedicated explicitly to employee housing. 

UVMH and Snyder-Braverman have now begun construction on an even bigger, more ambitious project that will provide more than 100 apartments for Health employees. The new site of the project, located at 112 Garden St., will include:

• 120 apartments made available for UVM Health employees.
• A 5,000-square-foot childcare facility for UVM Health employees.
• 1,500 square feet of retail space, likely to be filled by a cafe, open to the public community.

The new South Burlington apartments at 112 Garden St. are projected to open and be ready for occupancy by Summer 2024. As part of the UVM Health's ongoing efforts to support its workforce and to address the high cost of living, this is a positive step for UVMH in its mission to support its employees and provide quality healthcare services to the community. 

Dr. Sunny Eapen, president and chief executive officer of UVM Health, stated last December at the groundbreaking for 112 Garden St., "It is vital for UVM Health to have enough providers and staff to meet the record level of demand for health care services in our region." He continued, "These projects represent a strategic investment to support our people and build a sustainable workforce as we reduce our reliance on temporary workers." 

In addition to the 120 newly built, market-rate apartments and a cafe, the childcare facility at 112 Garden St. will provide up to 75 spots for infants through Pre-K, made available first to UVM Health employees. According to spokeswoman Annie Mackin, the goal for 112 Garden St. is to "evolve and adapt, [as we see] how things are working at 303 Market St., and listen to employees about their experience there." 

The 112 Garden St. project will also play an important role by contributing to the construction of new housing in the local area. According to Paul Conner, South Burlington's planning and zoning director, "This is what [UVM Health] is doing to alleviate the pressures they've been feeling as an employer, to participate in the construction of housing in the area." Conner called it a "small piece of the puzzle in terms of overall housing need."
