Diego Gray (Licensed Nurse Assistant)
Published April 3, 2026

Since May, Diego has been working as a Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) at UVM after completing the CVMC Nurse Assistant Trainee program. Now in a long-term care unit, he’s found a meaningful and unexpected path in healthcare.

Diego originally planned to go into physical therapy, but his experience working as an EMT shifted his perspective. “I wanted to get into the hospital in some way, shape, or form,” he said. That decision led him to become an LNA, with plans to pursue a nursing program in the future.

Working in long-term care has been especially impactful. “Long-term care is very different. You’re not having people in and out,” Diego explained. “Everyone there has either lived there for a couple of years or will be living there for a while, and it is like a family there. You really get to know the patients.”

He emphasized the importance of empathy in this setting. “We work in the resident’s home,” he said, noting the level of respect and compassion the role requires.

For Diego, the most rewarding part of the job is the daily interaction with residents. “Being able to make them smile and show that you care is my favorite part of each day,” he shared.

He also highlighted the supportive team environment, describing his coworkers as hardworking, empathetic, and always willing to help.

Outside of work, Diego enjoys spending time outdoors, especially hiking, snowboarding, and skiing—making the most of Vermont’s landscape.

As he looks ahead, Diego plans to continue his journey in healthcare by pursuing nursing, building on the strong foundation he’s developed in long-term care.
