Nikki Hansen’s path into nursing at UVM Health reflects years of growth and a strong commitment to patient care. She began her career with the organization four years ago in patient access but always knew she wanted to work more closely with patients. She took the LNA course through Helen Porter, transitioned into bedside care, and earned her LPN last year. Since July, she has been working as an LPN on the unit at Helen Porter.

With nearly 20 years of healthcare experience—including roles as a pharmacy technician, CNA, and work in medical billing and lab settings—nursing was always her end goal. Today, she primarily cares for long-term care residents, while also supporting post-acute, memory care, and sub-acute rehab patients when needed.

What Nikki values most about her unit is the consistency and connection she builds with residents. As a familiar face, she gets to know their routines, preferences, and personalities, creating a sense of trust and comfort. “The residents are my favorite part,” she shares, emphasizing how much she enjoys learning their stories and building meaningful relationships.

While the work can be physically and mentally demanding, Nikki finds it incredibly rewarding. She looks forward to greeting the residents each day and values the lessons and life experiences they share.

Outside of work, Nikki enjoys Vermont’s outdoors, especially in the summer and fall. She spends her time kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing—making the most of the seasons she loves.

Nikki’s journey highlights her dedication to growing within healthcare and her passion for making a difference in the lives of her residents every day.
